Sacred Mount of Ghiffa
Located in Ghiffa, in the province of Verbania-Cusio-Ossola, and overlooking one of the most evocative views of Lake Maggiore, with a wide view of the Lombard Prealps, the smallest of the Piedmontese Sacred Mountains includes three chapels dedicated to the Incoronata, to San Giovanni Battista and to Abraham, the sanctuary and the eighteenth-century portico of the Via Crucis. Surrounded by chestnut woods and reachable via an ancient archaeological path, it is one of the most fascinating Sacred Mountains from a landscape point of view, with a breathtaking view of the lake.
Church of San Gottardo in Cannobio
Jewel of the medieval village of Carmine Superiore, a hamlet of Cannobio, in the province of Verbania-Cusio-Ossola, the fourteenth-century Church of San Gottardo overlooks Lake Maggiore. It can be reached along a pleasant path that climbs the mountain from state road 34, in the locality of Carmine Inferiore, and it is worth a visit, even for the mere view of the lake, facing Maccagno. This hermitage is a veritable treasure trove of artistic treasures of great value, dated between the 15th and 16th centuries. Both inside and on the external walls, in fact, you can admire several frescoes mostly attributed to the Master of Carzoneso, mostly depicting biblical scenes.
Old Church of Belgirate
Romantic 12th century church perched on the hills of Belgirate, in the province of Verbania-Cusio-Ossola, between Stresa and Arona, it enjoys a fantastic view of Lake Maggiore. To certify the beauty of the place, there is also the FAI, or the Italian Environment Fund, the same foundation that manages the famous Villa BalbianelloVilla del Balbianello on Lake Como, which has included the Old Church of Belgirate in the special section of the Places of the Heart. From the churchyard, embellished by two majestic Tuscan cypresses and maritime pines, you can enjoy an incredible panorama, which sweeps over the Lombard shore of the province of Varese, and the surrounding mountain crown, up to Switzerland.
Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso di Leggiuno
The Hermitage of Santa Caterina del Sasso, located in Leggiuno, in the province of Varese, is undoubtedly one of the most evocative scenarios of Lake Maggiore. Overhanging a rocky wall overlooking the lake, the monastery, dating back to the 12th century, can be reached on foot via a staircase that connects it on one side with the Quicchio courtyard, a small cluster of houses, and on the other with a direct landing by lake.
